Happy Festivus and Winter Carnival!

December 24th, 2007

I was asked a very logical question last week about, “What do Jews do on Christmas?”

At first I laughed since this is one holiday that many of us actually follow the “stereotype.” Since moving to Arizona, we have not made too many connections with new friends but back in New Jersey, we had friends who were Non-Jews and if they invited us to come and celebrate with them, we would. I mean of course we didn’t eat the Ham but we would usually stop on by around dessert.

So to post the question again, “What do we do on Christmas?”

What do you think we do? We go out to eat some Chinese food and see a movie. Though last year, the Chinese food place we went to was closed and we ended up at a Mexican place, we USUALLY eat Chinese food so we will have to make sure to find a place that will be open tomorrow.

Don’t know what movie we are going to see yet, possibly that Nicholas Cage one, the Treasure something? If you know me on a personal level, I am not a movie buff but my husband is.

HAPPY FESTIVUS and WINTER CARNIVAL!

Teachers Need Teachers

November 26th, 2007

A great article was posted today in the AZ Central about teachers and mentors. For new teachers, many do need mentors. The crying chair is quite amusing to read about and the comments from the readers are even more hilarious with misspellings and higher than mighty attitudes. Anyone who has taught knows the ups and downs of the classroom and the educational system.

The first few years of being a new teacher can be difficult no matter where you are teaching. If you teach in suburbia or an urban school district, every teacher faces their own individual problems within their classroom.

The dreams of walking into a classroom as a new teacher can be earth shattering when the students don’t listen to you right from day one. After all the student loans are used in obtaining your teaching degree, not many people are honest that teaching is an art form. Have Questions about College? Chat with an Expert. Students, no matter what age, will test and play to see how far they can push you as a teacher. If you realize this before walking into your classroom, it will make your first few weeks of entering the classroom an easier transition.

Just because you give rules and say these are the classroom rules does not mean everyone will obey them. Remember yourself as a student and remember how you disobeyed your teachers.

The Freedom of College

November 25th, 2007

For the first time in many college student’s life, moving away from home and living on campus at college, the freedom student’s feel can be like a huge weight lifted off of their shoulders. Parental units are no longer around and for the first time in a student’s life, they get to make their own decisions and deal with the consequences.

The tramp stamp, the arm band, one drunken night; oh that Saturday night…then the next morning.

“Ouch, what is that pain?”

Aahh yes the first tattoo; the first sign of freedom and rebellion. Eighteen and legally an adult gives a student the right to vote and get a tattoo. Many times parents are not aware of the tattoo till a few months to a few years later; sometimes even after their child graduates!

Tattoos are part of the right of passage which expresses college freedom and creativity. As a parent, if you are not comfortable with your child getting a tattoo, speak to them about your feelings and hope that they hear your voice before heading down to the local tattoo shop.

If not, then your child will have something to remember that one night (or day) when they first got inked.

Happy Thanksgiving!

November 21st, 2007

I found these poems that I want to share with you. The Grandma poem really brought a strong emotion as we lost my Grandma Pearl this past June. Grandma Pearl was born on Thanksgiving and every year we would celebrate her birthday and I know this year for my family will be a tough one as it being the first Thanksgiving without my grandmother.

We always went to my Aunt’s for Thanksgiving and the custom, according to my sister, is still occurring. Unfortunately, we will not be joining my family as they are in New Jersey and we are in Arizona but our thoughts are with them. Through the foods we cook to the easy way of keeping in touch with the phone and the Internet; even though we are 2500 miles apart, technology makes it easier to feel we are closer.

All in a Word

By Aileen Fisher
T for time to be together, turkey, talk, and tangy weather.
H for harvest stored away, home, and hearth, and holiday.
A for autumn’s frosty art, and abundance in the heart.
N for neighbors, and November, nice things, new things to remember.
K for kitchen, kettles’ croon, kith and kin expected soon.
S for sizzles, sights, and sounds, and something special that abounds.
That spells ~~~THANKS—for joy in living and a jolly good Thanksgiving.

~~~~~~~~
At Grandma’s House
I like the taste of turkey
Any time throughout the year
But it never
seems to taste as good
As when Thanksgiving’s here.
Could be it’s all the trimmings
That are cooked with it to eat-
But I think it’s
eating at Grandma’s house
That makes it such a treat!
Writers on Strike
November 5th, 2007
The Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producer are on strike and picketing in NY and LA. This morning writer’s picketed outside NBC’s Rockefeller studios during the live Today Show chanting, “No contract, no shows!”
There are many freelancer organizations and associations, especially on both coasts. Are there other organizations not based in the Tri-State or West Coast area?
Does Phoenix, the Mid-West or the South have any organizations?
If not, should we as freelancers start some?
Is there a way for freelance writers to honor our picketing industry colleagues?
Yumie??? Yuwie???
November 2nd, 2007
YUWIE
So I was doing my normal searching around the net as I do quite often and came upon an ad about another social networking site. The difference with this site is it pays you for every click that hits your page.
Think about all the stuff you have on your MySpace page! Blogs, pics, backgrounds, comments, viewing other people’s pages…all that would make you money.
How you ask? If you listen to the video presentation they have set up, it will tell you how. How does the world make money? Advertising and sponsors.
If you are interested in checking out Yuwie, it’s free and you can just join for fun of connecting to other people.
Free Resources for Affiliates
October 25th, 2007
If you are interested in Internet Marketing, have you ever heard of MoreNiche?
One of my online networking connections pointed me to this site a few months ago and I didn’t give it enough time to review. The past two weeks I have been reading and reviewing the entire site more and they offer TONS of free information for their affiliates to use. From Webmaster ideas, forum support and the main Webmaster is always on the forums answering the newbie’s questions.
The members of MoreNiche are very supportive and it is a great place to learn about how to market your products and services online. If you are learning what SEO is or want to learn more about it, there are free resources, guides and articles to use.
If you have any questions about MoreNiche or want to learn more about how affiliate programs can bring you a consistent income, visit the site and read some of the available information.
Argosy University
August 18th, 2007
As I began researching about Ph.D programs, I came across Argosy University. I never heard of them and doing a search for universities in Phoenix, they popped up. I was interested in possibly pursuing a Ph.D in education but wasn’t ready to fully go back to sit in a classroom; Argosy offers combination programs. Independent studies and classroom instruction is possible and even full 100% financial aid is available. Students can even start classes before the financial aid is fully paid to the school!
Argosy has many interesting programs for graduate students. If you are interested, check out their site and a representative from the program of study you are interested in will set up a meeting to discuss your schooling options.
